Life Lessons From a Graduating High School Senior
High school graduation is here, which is a time of reflection, excitement and uncertainty for the class of 2024. For a graduating senior, the journey from freshman year Zoom classes to walking across the stage at graduation is undoubtedly filled with meaningful lessons.
For those entering high school this fall or those already in high school, it’s worth taking note of the lessons seniors have learned along the way.
Embrace Change
Throughout high school, change is constant. From transitioning to a new schedule, experiencing new teachers every year, and to evolving friendships and personal growth, embracing change teaches adaptability and resilience. Also remember that it is normal to make new friends and grow apart from others.
Disconnect from the Screens
While it may be tempting to spend hours each day scrolling through social media or to pull out your phone during class, you’re never going to create memories or learn the material in class while staring at your phone. Cherish the time spent with your peers in the classroom or at lunch by engaging in real conversations.
Get Involved
Whether it’s through participating in school sports, starting your own club, joining an existing one, joining leadership, finding new hobbies or other extracurricular activities, it is never too late to get involved. You never know when you will meet a new best friend or discover a new interest.
Value Relationships
High school is a time in life filled with complex relationships. If possible, try to stay out of drama. Also, instead of waiting until the last months of senior year to start making connections with your classmates, start now. At the end of senior year, many seniors realize they only have a couple of months left with their friends and wish they had spent more time together all along.
Balance is Key
Balancing academics, extracurriculars, social life and personal well-being is a challenging yet invaluable lesson learned in high school. While it is important to challenge yourself academically, don’t sign up for an impossible class schedule. Take classes for yourself and not to please others. Achieving balance leads to a more fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle.
Take Risks
Whether it’s trying out for a sports team, participating in a debate competition or applying to dream colleges, high school seniors understand the significance of stepping outside of their comfort zones. Remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
Stay True to Yourself
Amidst the pressures of conformity and societal expectations, remember to stay authentic. Find a group of friends who share your values, embrace your unique identity and don’t compromise for the sake of fitting in.
Embrace the Journey
Achieving a good grade, test score or reaching a goal in your sport, is nearly impossible without putting in work along the way. If you don’t learn to embrace the journey, it is challenging to feel fulfilled. In reality, high school flies by fast and the late-night study sessions and extra work along the way will soon be over and worth it.
The most important lessons learned in high school extend beyond the confines of classrooms and textbooks. As the seniors walk across the stage, they most importantly carry with them friendships forged, memories created and years of personal growth.
