“LET IT SNOW”
Not sure how many of our readers grew up as I did, mesmerized by the magic spell of pre-ski season films created by the late, great Warren Miller. The man made an entire industry of releasing high-energy, well-edited, beautifully shot, slow-motion ski films of brave adventures conquering mountains covered in perfect snow.
They were set to modern tunes with clever voiceovers, and they sparked a resurgence of a love for the slopes. His great wisdom was that he’d release his films that were shot the previous season, before ski season began, usually just after Halloween or so.
He called them “stoked” films, and rightfully so. They pushed the entire industry to get psyched for winter. Playing in real estate offices, college campuses, ski supply stores, bars, movie theaters – you name it. His films probably sold more equipment and rented more ski houses than anything going.
The nostalgia for Miller’s mastery of marketing to this raw emotion of “Let’s Go!” came back to me as I was on my giant iPhone11, scrolling down the hillside, and I came across Miramonte High School’s ski club on Instagram, officially titled “miramonte_snowsports.” It gave me the same kind of reminiscent rush to want to get up on the mountains ASAP and enjoy all they had to offer.
Only their club came with more purpose than a Warren Miller film.
Co-Founded by Co-Presidents Lucas Peterson and Sohann Renac their sophomore year. with a few friends and fellow mountain enthusiasts, they were inspired to create a ski and snowboard club that was as active as possible. Not just a “ghost club” that looks good on the college applications.
But rather a club that was going to be active-active. Physical skiing “active” and as an activist – helping to have a healthier mountain kind of “active.”
One that not only was truly, physically active, but also one that gave back to the mountain. The sentiment is popular, and the approach has now attracted 110 members from the school.
Conscious of global-warming weather changes affecting the sport they love, members promote organizations like POW, Protect Our Winters. The group’s goal is to organize several events during the season to reach their $2,000 commitment to the cause. Feel like you’d like to contribute to their dream? Please step up at https://donate.protectourwinters.org/team/551066.
Conscious, successful fundraising is something colleges love to see on student applications.
Most trips to the winter snow include Palisades Tahoe, which the team would like people to give a hat tip of appreciation for their support of the club. And of course, to the great support of Miramonte faculty advisors like Kelly Ginocchio and Megan Flores. The club members appreciate
you.
Let’s keep that snow coming down, shall we? See you on the mountain.
