The Reel Less Traveled – January 2025

Mayhem, Myth and Mystery

There is something for everyone this month – movies that entertain, maybe some scandalous fare and definitely films that inform – but what I would like to do is emphasize the top-notch entertaining selections.
Starting off with lighter fare, the Orinda Theatre will show “What’s Up, Doc?” Released in 1972, a period where there was a brash new breed of filmmakers, Peter Bogdanovich chose to go a little retro and recall a time when comedy was king.
Though there is a lot of silent-movie-type slapstick in this movie, there’s also witty dialogue that recalls the clever wordplay of the ‘30s and ‘40s, plus unlikely romantic angles and just plain silliness – including a chase sequence through the streets of San Francisco that has to be seen to be believed.
Starring Ryan O’Neal and the ever delightful Barbra Streisand, this film also introduces Madeline Kahn, with Kenneth Mars along for the ride. It was rated G upon its initial release – a rarity at the time when most movies were either PG or R-rated. It screens on Jan. 16 at 6:30 pm. Admission is free.
The Classic Movie Matinee is next with “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad,” the first of the three Sinbad films Ray Harryhausen had a hand in making.
Though it came out in 1958, the stop-motion artistry is a wonder to behold. By this time, Harryhausen had already established himself as a master of the technique, so much so that many would flock to the theater just to see the monsters and mythical creatures he brought to life. And this was not wholly unjustified, since the actual story was not all that memorable. It screens on Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
The International Film Showcase brings us back down to earth and to the present day with “After Love.” A woman whose husband suddenly and unexpectedly dies soon finds out that he has been leading a double life with another family.
As fraught with drama and vitriol as this situation could be, here it is presented with a sad, quiet dignity as both women slowly come to learn the truth about the other. There is far more to it, though. Matters of faith, deception and propriety also come into play.
Times and exact dates are not available yet, but as always, it is highly advisable to check both orindamovies.com and internationalshowcase.org. for additional information and trailers.
So, I leave you now, cries of Happy New Year still ringing in my ears with my usual recommendation to always veer toward those wonderful images made from sound and light – for that’s where the reel magic lies.
