College Corner – Sep. 2026

Two weeks before I move out

In my last College Corner column, I wrote about trying to fit my life into two suitcases and wondering if I’d get the classes I wanted.
Now that I’m a couple of weeks away from moving into George Washington University, I can finally start to answer those questions.
It recently hit me that two suitcases isn’t going to happen. Four to six is more what I’m aiming for.
As for class registration, I got all the classes I wanted, which I’m very excited about. I am most looking forward to taking Farsi and am grateful that I have no classes past 2 pm.
I’m hoping to use my free time in the afternoons to be active in student clubs and organizations. I hear some of the best college memories come from the people you meet outside of classes.
Last weekend, my family hosted a Bay Area GW (George Washington) students’ party for the freshmen in my class, and we had so much fun getting to know each other.
GW is popular for international relations and political science, so it was funny meeting everyone with the same majors. It also gave us a lot to talk about. All of us having our location in common also made for good bonding because GW’s students are primarily from the East Coast or are international students.
As move-in gets closer, the nerves are definitely starting to mix with the excitement. For months, college felt like something I was planning for. Now, it finally feels real.
A couple of weeks ago, I met my roommates for the first time at orientation, and we all clicked, which contributed to calming our nerves. We laughed over us all having different accents and my Massachusetts roommate calling a remote a clicker.
Soon, my friends from home will all be at different universities, and because we have different schedules, it will be hard to find time to catch up during breaks. We’re convinced we will find a way to make time for each other, but we’re compensating by spending as much time as we can together now.
My best friends and I are spending a few days at a lake in the valley as our last hoorah together before we say bye.
Leaving each other is hard for us to think about, so instead we just make as many memories as we can with the summer we have left.
Another important part of my summer is spending as much time with my family as possible. Even if we’re busy with our own activities, we always make time to hang out.
It’s weird saying goodbye to my favorite matcha place in Berkeley, the Rim Trail above the Lafayette Reservoir, and my best friends, but I know that everything will work out.
In my next column, I will have moved to GW, and my packing problem will be replaced with new stressors and activities. Stay tuned for the ride.
