Local journalism thrives when community members step forward to tell the stories that matter most. That’s why The Orinda News, the city’s nonprofit community newspaper, is seeking a paid city beat reporter and feature writers to help cover the people, events and issues shaping Orinda.
Published monthly, The Orinda News has long served as a trusted source of local information, from City Council decisions and school developments to community celebrations and profiles of residents making a difference.
Now the paper is looking for writers who want to be part of that mission – and give back to their community through meaningful storytelling.
Writers for The Orinda News do more than report facts. They help document the life of the city, capture the voices of neighbors and highlight the issues that affect daily life in Orinda.
From covering local government meetings to writing engaging feature stories about residents, artists, volunteers and organizations, contributors play a key role in keeping the community informed and connected.
For many writers, the experience is also deeply rewarding. Local journalism offers the opportunity to meet interesting people, learn about the inner workings of the community and contribute to a publication that residents rely on every month. It’s a chance to strengthen civic engagement and ensure important local stories are told.
The newspaper is particularly interested in a paid city beat reporter who can regularly cover city government and related issues. This position can also be split into a team of city hall reporters, so one reporter can take a break every other month.
Feature writers are also needed to produce compelling stories about community life. Previous journalism experience is helpful, and a basic understanding of AP Style is a bonus, but curiosity, reliability and strong writing skills are the most important qualities.
As a nonprofit publication, The Orinda News depends on dedicated writers who care about preserving strong local journalism. Their work helps ensure that residents stay informed and that the unique character of Orinda continues to be documented for future generations.
Those interested in contributing should contact Executive Editor Clay Kallam at claykallam@theorindanews.com and Editor-in-Chief Charlie Earley at editor@theorindanews.com.
Writers of all backgrounds with a passion for community storytelling are encouraged to reach out.
