With the election this month, civic engagement is more important than ever. High school junior, George Balan, was recently elected president of the California High School Democrats (CAHSD) and co-chair of Miramonte’s chapter.
CAHSD focuses on advancing democratic values at the local and state levels through lobbying events, backing progressive campaigns and voter registration work.
Balan works with 1200 active members at the state-wide level.
“From students living in the suburbs of Orange County to the bustling streets of Sacramento, I now have the opportunity to take action on the unique perspectives and insights of all six million California students,” he said.
Last year, Balan served as the CAHSD Finance Director where he led fundraising and engagement efforts. When only 15 years old, Balan created a financial foundation of over $30,000 that CAHSD uses to mobilize young people.
Outraising previous terms by over 10 times, Balan was prepared to take on the role of state president. However, what ultimately shaped his readiness was his active role in Speech and Debate.
“It showed me how to transform my ideas into persuasive arguments, adapt others’ points into my own, and most importantly, how to be an advocate,” said Balan.
Although he was only recently elected, Sophene Avedissian, CAHSD’s Communication Director, said Balan has already started spearheading impactful events like the launch of the CAHSD Opportunities Database.
The database serves as members’ central hub to learn more about upcoming CAHSD events, democratic internship opportunities and volunteer positions.
Avedissian said Balan has made this project, which dozens of members have already used, a reality in only a couple of weeks.
“It’s a great resource for anyone looking to deepen their involvement in youth politics or with CAHSD,” said Avedissian.
CAHSD and Balan have hosted phone banking events for Michelle Chambers, a State Senate District 35 candidate, and Nick Schultz, a candidate for State Assembly District 44.
Outside of Balan’s role at the state level, he also co-leads Miramonte’s chapter with high school junior Christophe Davis.
Davis said that Balan’s contributions to CAHSD have been invaluable.
“He worked tirelessly to create a space where identities are respected and new ideas are explored,” Davis said. “His ongoing efforts keep our community informed and civically engaged, both on and off campus.”
Together, Balan and Davis oversee 30 active members and have worked on canvassing events with elected officials and candidates, including Candace Evans, who is currently running for Orinda City Council.
Despite the inclement weather and the repetitive work that door-knocking brings, Balan said it’s worth it.
“Because being a democrat means fighting for people like us,” said Balan. “All of the work that I do comes from a lens of equity and inclusion, which directly overlaps with the values that the Democratic Party and democratic candidates hold.”
Beyond the work of canvassing, Davis emphasizes that CAHSD and their club can leave a real impact on youth.
“Miramonte students should join CAHSD to become more informed about the world around them and to learn how they can actively shape the political landscape,” Davis said.
If Balan had one wish this November, it would be for everyone to vote in this upcoming election.
“This election isn’t just about politics – it’s about our freedoms, our climate, our rights and much more,” he said. “When we vote, we create the future we want to see.”
