Two Miramonte students vlog their senior years every day
Two seniors at Miramonte are making the most of their senior year through daily Instagram vlogging.
What started as a fun activity for Reilly Mapaye and Walter Marpaung turned into a tradition of videoing their routines, friendship and adventures.
Their page, @seniorcamz on Instagram, has more than 320 followers, and each “day in the life” video averages 1,700 views. With 146 posts, Mapaye and Marpaung have 26,000 overall views.
Mapaye says his content is for him to look back on and remember the good old days.
“We’re just average students – like we’re not Division 1 athletes or crazy in academics, we’re just a couple of high school seniors that know it’s our last year of childhood,” said Mapaye. “And we’re gonna make the most of it.”
Staying true to himself is what Mapaye finds most important.
“The overall structure of my day is the same, but whether I’m in English and we’re doing an assignment on poetry or making creatures like Frankenstein, those are the kind of things that make each day special,” he said.
Sometimes, they post multiple videos a day when the two want to do special segments.
The structure of the segments is usually Mapaye or Marpaung interviewing seniors to reflect on different aspects of their lives.
In August, Mapaye and Marpaung asked the question, “Where will you be in 10 years?,” through a compilation video. In September, they asked “What would you tell your younger self?” Most recently, before Thanksgiving, they asked students what they were grateful for.
Marpaung noticed that special segments like this have built a community at Miramonte.
“We get lots of positive recognition throughout the school,” he said. “I love it when people shout seniorcamz out when Reilly and I are walking around campus.”
Creating funny videos to look back on is also equally important to the two. One of seniorcamz’s most popular videos was when they ate a miracle berry, which is a food that is supposed to alter your taste buds.
For example, if someone eats a miracle berry and then eats a lemon directly after, it would taste sweet.
Mapaye was confused that such a silly video did so well.
“Walter and I posted the video as kind of a filler episode, and when it started to rack up views, Walter called me saying, ‘Yo! This vid is going viral’,” said Mapaye.
The two were perplexed – but also happy – because it showed them that another type of content could be well received.
Whether the video is serious or funny, Marpaung and Mapaye credit their fun and success to their friendship.
Mapaye said that his favorite thing about working with Walter is that nothing is fake.
“He picks me up when I’m down, I pick him up when he’s down, and we both really just understand each other,” said Mapaye. “I think in this world where there’s a lot of fake friends and all of that stuff, Walter is there for me.”
Marpaung feels the same way about Mapaye.
“Seniorcamz wouldn’t be seniorcamz without my boy Reilly,” he said. “Having Reilly as my partner in seniorcamz means that I have a partner who will always come through.”
