The Central Contra Costa Sanitary District may not attract the attention of a city council or school board race, but its decisions affect a fundamental public service, and the rates residents pay for it.
The district collects and treats wastewater, maintains more than 1,500 miles of sewer pipelines, produces and distributes recycled water, and operates a household hazardous-waste collection program.
Its 146-square-mile service area serves nearly 500,000 residents and includes Orinda, Lafayette and Moraga.
Two candidates are competing Nov. 3 for Central San’s Division 2 seat: incumbent Michael R. McGill and challenger Brian Henderson.
The election will determine who represents the region as Central San addresses the ongoing demands of maintaining essential infrastructure, managing rates and planning for the district’s
future.
McGill has served on the Central San board since 2006 and currently serves as board president. A registered professional civil engineer, he has more than 40 years of experience in public works and municipal engineering.
He is president and principal engineer of MMS Design Associates, a consulting firm specializing in infrastructure planning and design. He also serves on Contra Costa’s Local Area Formation Commission and is Central San’s liaison to Orinda, Lafayette and Moraga.
Henderson is a longtime Miramonte High School math teacher and the school’s newly appointed head cross-country coach. He has taught at Miramonte since 1998 and previously coached its cross-country program for more than 18 years. He also coached at Moreau Catholic and California High School in San Ramon.
The winner will serve a four-year term on a board that meets twice monthly to set the district’s rates and capital priorities.
