Author, illustrator and avid birder Oliver James.

Birding becomes hyperlocal this month when Orinda Books hosts Oliver James, author and illustrator of The Birds of Berkeley. Born and raised in Berkeley, James has been fascinated by birds since the age of five. Since then, he has participated in national birding tournaments, worked as a birding guide and taken part in ornithological research from Alaska to Peru.
The Birds of Berkeley depicts 25 of the most common birds that can be seen in Berkeley, each beautifully illustrated by James. Unlike traditional field guides, this slim volume is packed with personality, both through the illustrations and accompanying prose.
Oliver James will present a short talk on identifying and appreciating our avian neighbors at Orinda Books on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 pm. To see samples of his illustrations, visit http://www.oliver-james.com.
