Formula 1’s Current Dominating Team Could Be Facing Trouble
These past few years, fans have witnessed the Red Bull Honda team dominating the sport with back-to-back world championships. For example, Max Verstappen winning the Drivers’ Championship every year since 2021 and Red Bull Honda winning the Constructors’ Championship since 2022, which was also the first year of F1’s new car regulations. This is a change from Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton’s dominance of the sport from 2014, when V6 Turbo Hybrids were introduced under the new regulations at the time.
The highs are great, but they don’t always last. Every team has their period of dominance.
McLaren Honda with Ayrton Senna, Ferrari with Michael Schumacher, Vettel with Red Bull and Hamilton with Mercedes. Currently, it’s Verstappen’s era, which is off the heels of one of the most dominant performances ever by a team, winning 21 out of 22 races in 2023. However, it’s starting to look like there is a chink in their armor, since the competition has caught up to Red Bull Honda.
In fact, key members and relationships within the team are starting to depart.
Adrian Newey, a renowned figure of the sport who designed multiple championship-winning cars, decided to terminate his contract early, after being with Red Bull since 2006, not to mention other members who were poached to work for different teams.
Red Bull’s power-unit partner Honda will leave the team in 2026, to be a factory team with Aston Martin. Although this was known for a while, Red Bull took on the task of building their own power unit to be ready in 2026. This is no easy feat, since no other engine manufacturer has joined F1 due to how challenging and costly it is to build a reliable and competitive power unit.
Verstappen is still leading the driver’s championship with a healthy lead. But the competition of 2nd-place team McLaren is starting to catch up to both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship as Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, is struggling to finish races in the top 10 positions. This is not a good sign because Mercedes is now starting to perform at a podium level following their low performance struggles since 2022. This all leaves Verstappen alone at the front of the grid, fighting off the competition.
The 2024 season is now halfway done. Early in the year, at the first few races, it was seen and thought that it would be a repeat of 2023’s dominance as Verstappen continued to win races, but that isn’t the case anymore.
There have now been seven different drivers who have won a race so far this season. That has not happened in Formula 1 in a long while. Unlike other categories of racing, F1 is not spec. Every team and manufacturer is different and invests millions of dollars to be competitive. As of right now, four teams are racing at the front.
