On Sunday, Aug. 18, the Lamorinda Idol Finals was held before raucous audiences that filled the Orinda Theatre for four separate 90-minute segments. The setting was akin to the Academy Awards, with sound, lighting, camera and projection installations taking a full day with the work of professionals from Desired Effect and many volunteers from Orinda Rotary and parents of the participants. Singers ranged from elementary to high school students who competed in categories by grade, with four solo categories and three group categories. Each performance received immediate feedback from a panel of judges, all with performing experience. Winners in each category were decided by a combination of the votes of the judges and the audience. Winners received cash awards, and the winners were announced in a final awards segment, amid high drama. In addition to the awards for each category, the Audience Award went to the singer who had the most audience votes but was not a category winner. This was the 20th edition of Lamorinda Idol, a wonderful activity involving the young people of Lafayette, Orinda and Moraga.
