Gratitude should be at the top of everyone’s Christmas list
As we round the corner into December, I’m reminded once again that this is the season for gratitude … and elastic waistbands.
Let’s be honest, between Thanksgiving leftovers, holiday parties and every irresistible cookie tray within arm’s reach, this time of year is a test of willpower few of us pass. But if we’re going to pack on a few “winter training pounds,” at least we’re doing it together, as a community that knows how to celebrate, laugh and give thanks.
And there’s certainly plenty to be thankful for here in Orinda. Our city continues to thrive because of the tireless work of so many people who make this community what it is – warm, vibrant and full of heart.
To our staff and volunteers who pour their time and energy into the incredible events that bring us together – thank you. These aren’t small undertakings, they’re labors of love that connect generations and neighbors alike.
Take Seniors Around Town, led by the wonderful Eloise Sotelo. Eloise stepped in this year and has done a remarkable job keeping this essential program thriving. Her leadership ensures our seniors continue to have the support and companionship that make Orinda such a special place to call home.
Then there’s the Fourth of July parade, often imitated but never duplicated. Under the dedicated direction of Lisa Burlini, our parade remains the crown jewel of Orinda tradition, part Norman Rockwell painting, part joyful chaos and all heart.
And of course, the Annual Orinda Car Show, which is the brainchild and ongoing masterpiece of Bill Waterman. What started as a “little ‘ole car show” has become a full-fledged Bay Area must-see event. But as Bill often reminds us, it’s not just about the cars, it’s about community, conversation and connection.
Behind every one of these events are dozens of volunteers – people who give their time, energy and smiles simply because they love this town. To each and every one of you, thank you. You are the spirit of Orinda.
I would also be remiss if I didn’t recognize and congratulate our Editor-in-Chief, Charlie Earley, and our Executive Editor, Clay Kallam. Their leadership, collaboration and dedication have helped elevate The Orinda News to new heights.
Clay, who took the reins as Executive Editor about a year ago, continues to bring his trademark blend of sharp insight and local wisdom to our pages. Many of you have likely enjoyed one (or several) of his thoughtful pieces this past year. I’ve known Clay for more than 20 years, and it’s wonderful to see his expertise and humor now being shared with our entire community.
To both Charlie and Clay – and to our incredible team of writers – thank you. Month after month, your stories capture the heartbeat of this community. Readers constantly tell us how much your articles mean to them, how they inform, inspire and make Orinda feel a little smaller and a lot more connected.
On a personal note … December is also one of the busiest months in my household. As some of you know, I coach high school basketball. After a November full of practices and preparation, December hits with games, travel tournaments and late nights in unfamiliar gyms.
Add Christmas, New Year’s and my wife’s birthday into that mix, and let’s just say my time management skills are tested. Fortunately, we’ll be heading to Oahu for a mid-December tournament this year – so marital harmony and sunshine are both on the itinerary. (If only we could practice on the beach…).
As we close out 2025 and look forward to a New Year, I’m filled with gratitude for what we’ve built – and excitement for what’s ahead.
The Orinda Association continues to grow and evolve, expanding our programs, outreach and community connections. We’re always looking for more hands and hearts to join us, so if you’ve ever thought about getting involved, this is your sign – reach out. We’d love to have you on the team.
From my family to yours, may your holidays be filled with laughter, good food and maybe just a touch of that well-earned winter weight. Here’s to a joyful season and a bright New Year in Orinda and beyond.
