Seniors Around Town is service that truly matters
The Orinda Association is funded by donations from Orinda residents like you.
Compassion is often spoken of as an ideal – something we value, but too often leave in the realm of good intentions. Its true meaning, however, is found in action.
I was reminded of this recently in a conversation with a volunteer driver from The Orinda Association’s Seniors Around Town Program (SAT), who described how important this work has become in her life and how much it means to the people she serves. As the program director for SAT, I am privileged to witness this simple but powerfully meaningful demonstration of compassion by our volunteers on a daily basis.
For older and dependent adults, the day they can no longer drive marks a profound turning point. Driving represents independence, self-sufficiency and connection to the wider world. Without it, routine tasks – medical appointments, grocery shopping, visiting friends – become difficult or impossible. Over time, the loss of mobility can lead not only to inconvenience, but to isolation.
This is where compassion becomes tangible.
Seniors Around Town organizes volunteer drivers who provide rides for those who can no longer drive themselves.
At first glance, it may seem like a simple service. But the impact runs far deeper.
Each ride provides access – to healthcare, essential errands and to social connection. Just as important, it offers reassurance. Riders know someone will show up. They know they have not been forgotten. For clients who are isolated, it also becomes a conversation, a shared moment, a reminder of our shared humanity.
Compassion is evident in the volunteers who give their time and attention. It is also reflected in the care taken to ensure the service is safe, reliable and consistent. This kind of organized compassion transforms goodwill into something sustainable – something people can depend on.
The benefits extend beyond the individual. When seniors and dependent adults can attend medical appointments, maintain their health and remain connected to their communities, everyone benefits. Compassion strengthens the fabric of the entire community.
Services like Seniors Around Town exist because people choose to care. They exist because volunteers are willing to help, and because supporters recognize the importance of preserving dignity and independence for their neighbors.
For those who have ever considered volunteering or offering support, there are few opportunities with such direct and meaningful impact.
Ultimately, compassion is not defined by grand gestures. It is defined by showing up. It is defined by recognizing a need and responding. It’s the simple act of a hand on a steering wheel and the reassurance that someone cares enough to help you get where you need to go.
