Canadian singing sensation David Marino will leave the cast of Michel Legrand's “Les Demoiselles de Rochefort” at the Lido Theatre in Paris for several days in order to sing at Live at the Orinda on May 10.
When multilingual jazz sensation David Marino sang at Live at the Orinda three years ago, it was only his second performance outside of his native country of Canada. Since then, he has toured the world, bringing his rich tenor and charismatic personality to New York’s Birdland Jazz Club and Montreal’s Place Des Arts, as well as venues throughout the U.S., London, Paris and Rome.
He returns May 10 for the third time to the Orinda concert series, after a recent performance with popular Lithuanian pianist Ieva Dudaite in front of 10,000 people.
“Very exciting to do my first arena show, but, at the end of the day, the music is the music. Whether you’re singing for one person or 10,000, it’s the music that leads me. I try to stay true to that,” said Marino from his dressing room at the Lido in Paris where he’s performing a leading role in Michel Legrand and Jacques Demy’s “Les Demoiselles de Rochefort” through June 14.
Marino has been living in Paris since rehearsals began in August 2025. “Les Demoiselles” was originally scheduled to close Jan. 11. When it was extended to June 14, Marino could have cancelled Live at the Orinda but instead, he went to the director and asked for a few days off to fly to the Bay Area.
“The Orinda concert series is so special to me. I feel like I’ve grown through the Orinda,” Marino said. “My career was just at the very, very beginning when I sang for the first time in the Orinda concert series. And it has grown so much since that first time. It’s just cool to go back to where it started in a sense. I love singing there. The people are so friendly, so warm, honestly, it’s one of my favorite gigs. I’m very excited to return.”
In fact, Marino received word he was cast in the career-changing Paris musical as his plane was taking off for the Bay Area and his second appearance at Live at the Orinda.
For his third appearance at the concert series, Marino will sing many songs from the American Songbook, plus some of the music from “Les Demoiselles.”
“I’ve grown so attached to the music doing seven shows a week. I also want to share some of the experiences I’ve had in Paris, and the journey I’ve been on since last year,” Marino said.
He will also sing several songs by the songwriting team of Marilyn and Alan Bergman, favorite composers of Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, as well as a few original tunes.
In what little spare time he has, Marino is working on two albums. The first will include original songs from his collaboration with several songwriters, while the second album will focus on Michel Legrand’s songs.
“I have an EP of four different songs called ‘The Debut Sessions’ available online now, but I’m taking my time with the albums. I want to do them properly,” he said.
Despite the amazing trajectory of his career, Marino manages to keep his attention on the music.
“I’m doing things I never even dreamed of as a kid. Very exciting. I’m so fortunate to have parents that have supported me through this journey. Which isn’t always the case for artists,” Marino said. “I just try not to get too caught up in all the hype and just focus on the music.”
