The 2025 Lamorinda Idol performers gather for a group photo, showcasing the region’s young vocal talent. From soloists to groups across K-12 grades, these finalists honed their skills through workshops and performances, embodying the program’s mission to inspire and develop aspiring singers throughout Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda.

Lamorinda Idol, the long-running youth singing competition established in 2006, is set to return for its 2026 season, running from April through August and offering local students a chance to develop and showcase their vocal talents.
Originally called Orinda Idol, the competition was “just a singing competition for Orinda youth,” said Steve Harwood, co-chair of Lamorinda Idol. “It has been transformed over time so that it is now Lamorinda Idol, open to youth throughout Lamorinda, with group as well as solo categories. It is also much more than a competition. It is a multifaceted program designed to give young singers an avenue to pursue their singing passion.”
Open to students from kindergarten through 12th grade who live in or attend school in Lafayette, Moraga or Orinda, the program welcomes both solo performers and groups of two to 10 singers.
The competition is divided into grade-based categories, with soloists competing in four divisions (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and groups competing in three divisions (K-5, 6-8, and 9-12). Group placement is determined by the grade of the oldest member. Students from outside Lamorinda may participate in group performances if at least one member resides in or attends school in the area. Each student may audition twice – once as a soloist and once as part of a group.
Finalists in each category are selected by a panel of three judges with backgrounds in music and performance. Judges evaluate contestants on vocal accuracy, technique, emotional expression, diction and overall storytelling ability.
Selections are made through a confidential ranking process, and audition results will be emailed to participants by June 3. Due to time constraints, feedback will not be provided following auditions.
Rodger Morris, who also serves as co-chair, shared a personal perspective.
“My son Ethan first participated four years ago after first grade,” he said. “He’s auditioned and been a part of the program each year since and it’s absolutely something he looks forward to each summer.”
Reflecting on the program’s growth, Morris added, “It’s amazing to think this is the program’s 21st year since beginning in 2006, and it couldn’t have survived and thrived as much as it has without Steve’s incredible guidance and support.”
Following auditions, finalists are required to complete several program steps, including paying participation fees, submitting song selections and materials, and signing up for performances, workshops, and volunteer roles.
Throughout the summer, finalists can participate in workshops designed to strengthen their performance skills. Two Zoom workshops focused on individual song performance will be led by Rena Wilson, co-founder of Performing Academy and a professional actor and vocal coach.
Additional in-person workshops will be held in Lafayette, featuring themed sessions that allow participants to perform and receive targeted feedback. Wilson will be joined by the director of Performing Academy, Renee DeWeese Moran, and former Lamorinda Idol winners Jocie Purcell and Tosca Maltzman Bloom.
Harwood emphasized the importance of these experiences.
“It gives me joy to support young people in pursuit of their passion for singing,” he said. “My favorite part is seeing the growth of each of the performers in the course of the various concerts and our workshop program, and then see them in top form at the Finals.”
The program culminates in a series of community performances and a final showcase, highlighting the growth and artistry of Lamorinda’s young singers. Key dates for the 2026 season include: April 1-30 (audition registration), June 26 (performance in Lafayette Plaza), July 9 (performance in Orinda Community Park), July 29 (performance in Moraga Commons) and August 16 (Finals at the Orinda Theatre).
