David Marino, the multi-talented Canadian singer, brings his wealth of talent to Live at the Orinda! May 18. The young crooner will sing favorite selections from the American Songbook, plus a few surprises.
Live at the Orinda! welcomes back Canadian singing sensation David Marino May 18. The 26-year-old jazz crooner began his performing career at the tender age of six and went on to be a finalist in Canada’s hit TV show “The Voice.”
Under the mentorship of French singer/songwriter Pierre Lapointe, Marino has become a sought-after talent on both coasts.
“I had such a lovely reception in Orinda when I came for the first time last year – and it was so much warmer than Canada that I wanted to stay,” Marino said.
The busy entertainer calls Montreal his first home, with New York a close second. Not only does he perform many concerts in the Big Apple, but most of his friends live there, including one he got to know in Orinda, Ava Nicole Frances. Frances did a guest star appearance at Marino’s Live at the Orinda! show last year.
“She’s a terrific singer, and we really hit it off. We’ve become very close friends since then,” Marino said. “She’s doing amazing in New York and will be releasing some of her own music soon as well.”
Following his concert in Orinda, Marino will travel to Europe for several performances in Amsterdam and London, as well as performing on a river cruise on the Rhine.
The popular singer is also working on his first album with a Canadian record label. While the album itself won’t be released until late 2025 or early 2026, an EP with four songs has just been released on digital platforms such as Spotify and iTunes.
In addition to his concerts in Canada and the United States, Marino has been busy on stage as an actor.
A graduate of The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York, he recently played Melchoir in “Spring Awakening.” In July, Marino travels to Portland ME to play Toby in a production of “Sweeney Todd” with Opera Maine.
“I’ve really been blessed with the number of projects I’ve had this year,” Marino said. “I love to keep learning things and growing. It’s so important.”
In Orinda, the enthusiastic young singer will perform his favorite selections from the American Songbook including Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” and a Paul McCartney song he has put his own unique twist on.
“I’ve jazzified McCartney’s song a bit. I enjoy doing my own original take on songs you wouldn’t expect to hear a jazz singer performing. But I’ll also be singing in multiple languages,” Marino said. “That’s a big part of my show. I love singing in French and, of course, Italian as my grandparents were both from Italy. They only speak Italian, so I grew up speaking the language. They gave me their cultural references and favorite Italian artists so it’s a big part of who I am today. Studying the classics and artists like Pavarotti gave me a good foundation and technique for a healthy voice.”
Marino will perform at the Live at the Orinda! concert series at the Orinda Theatre, 4 Orinda Theatre Square, May 18 at 5 p.m. Pianist John Gilbert will accompany him. For tickets, go to https://www.orindamovies.com/live-at-orinda/.
