October offers Orinda plenty of fall fun
There are always dates to remember, but here are a few Orinda-related October dates to circle on your calendar.
• Do you know someone who makes Orinda a better place to live? Nominate them for Orinda Citizen of the Year by Oct. 1.
• The final free Movie in the Park, “Shrek” is Oct. 3. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and popcorn.
• The Live At the Orinda! concert season opening night is Oct. 5 with Melissa Manchester. Get a ticket to attend this special musical evening at the Orinda Theatre. (While her show is sold out, there’s always a wait list.)
• Interested in meeting new people and helping the community? The Orinda Junior Women’s Club is having its annual new member event on Oct. 14. I have been on this board for 35 years and met most of my best friends, learned how to run a fundraiser and board meeting, and met new people in Orinda. Please reach out to Orinda Juniors or me to be a part of this great organization.
• Free Movie Night is Oct. 16 at the Orinda Theatre with “The Silence of the Lambs.”
• On Oct. 23 there will be Halloween-themed booths filled with activities, games and refreshments at Orinda’s Trunk & Treat. Pre-register for this family-friendly event at the Community Center on Orinda Parks and Rec’s Special Events page.
• Spend the day in Theatre Square on Sunday, Oct. 26, starting with “Curse of the Demon” at 1 p.m. Take a stroll afterwards and maybe stop at the Boo Loo Lounge before the Steve Freund Blues Trio takes the stage at 5 p.m.
This month, we’ll also start to see hay bales and pumpkins around town at the freeway onramp, at Glorietta’s Funfest, Sleepy Hollow’s Creepy Hollow and Del Rey’s Boo Fest. Thank you to the volunteers who create these lasting memories.
And finally, a couple other notes:
• October colors are usually orange and black, but we are starting to plan for the Red, White and Blue in Orinda. That’s right, the city’s largest community event – the 4th of July parade and activities in the park.
Thousands come to watch and cheer friends and families at this hometown parade, hundreds are in the parade on floats or walking politely and handing out candy. Hundreds of volunteers decorate and set up activities in the park, and not just any activities. For example, there’s a full kids’ carnival with booths and prizes. Events like this one, takes months and months of planning.
• Next year, The Orinda Association will celebrate 80 years of making Orinda even better.
We have updated more than our logo since then. We have added a Volunteer Center, with the Seniors Around Town ride program, now at its 20-year mark, and we have organized the Orinda Classic Car Show for 21 years.
The Orinda News is supported and published by The Orinda Association – and since March 1986 this paper continues to be the most sought-after source for news in Orinda. The paper continues to inform us about the goings and comings here in town.
