Gratitude should bloom through all of November

November is National Gratitude Month, and with Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s the perfect time to pause and recognize the power of thankfulness in our lives.
Research shows that practicing gratitude is not just uplifting emotionally, but physically healing as well. Studies have found gratitude can reduce pain, improve sleep, lower stress and even ease depression. In a world that often moves too quickly, gratitude offers us a way to take a moment, breathe and think about what really matters.
Living in Orinda has given me so many reasons to be grateful – our beautiful natural surroundings, the sense of safety and belonging, and, most of all, the friendly and generous people who care deeply about our community.
Which leads me to recommend one of the most profound experiences of gratitude in my life – driving for The Orinda Association’s Seniors Around Town program. I’ve been volunteering since I arrived in Orinda several years ago, and it’s impossible to explain how much joy and gratitude I have experienced through this work.
The gratitude flows in both directions. Seniors are so appreciative and can’t thank me enough when I show up on their doorstep to drive them to their appointments or errands.
But I also feel gratitude bloom inside me. Spending time with people decades older than myself helps me reflect on my own blessings.
Many of the seniors I drive have endured great loss – spouses, children, friends and, in many cases, much of their independence. Yet their resilience, humor and grace inspire me.
Time moves quickly and I understand their reality is not so far from my own future. That recognition makes me treasure my present life even more. After a drive, I find myself a little more grateful: more motivated to get my still-healthy body to the gym, more patient and kinder to my husband of 32 years, and more inclined to see everyday tasks differently.
Even something as simple as a trip to the grocery store feels like a privilege instead of a chore – because I can still do it on my own.
Seniors Around Town is more than just a ride; it gives mobility and dignity to our older neighbors. And it gives volunteers like me perspective, connection and joy – and the chance to feel the life-changing power of gratitude firsthand.
This November, I hope you’ll reflect on the blessings in your life, big and small. Gratitude isn’t just something we feel – it’s a practice, one that improves our health, strengthens our relationships and enriches our community.
