Katelyn Huynh received the Tim McInerney Memorial Award sponsored by the Moraga Lions Club. She received the $1000 scholarship award for her effort and time spent this past summer aiding a 15-year-old camper with Down Syndrome.
Huynh said her camp pals pushed her to not only better understand her partner and her needs, but also to think on her feet in the face of challenges. “This has given me a new outlook on how to build connections with others,” said Huynh, of Orinda, who will attend University of California, Riverside, majoring in kinesiology and neuroscience.
Tim McInerney was a graduate of Campolindo High School in 1984. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1988. He received a teaching credential from Saint Mary’s College. In 1991, Tim suffered a swimming accident in Mexico that left him a quadriplegic. He became a computer programmer at UC Berkeley. He was an active Moraga Lion in 2008 and was named “Lion of the Year.” Tim passed away in 2010 at the
age of 46.
