Park it in Orinda

Orinda Park is the place to be this month! On June 1, let’s enjoy the opening night of Spider’s Web as Orinda Starlight Village Players kick off their season with Agatha Christie’s play in the park amphitheater.

Happy Trails to you on June 2 as we celebrate National Trails Day. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System, pledge to pack out trash, join a trail work project, or clean up a park. In 1996, the City of Orinda won a Trail Town USA designation. Get out there and stomp about, but remember to leave the trail better than you found it.

On June 4, the Orinda Library’s Summer Reading Festival, open to all ages, begins.  Drop in any time and see what the new theme will be this year.

Remember to Vote on Tuesday, June 5. You can put your mail-in ballot in the “CoCo Vote-N-Go” drop box at City Hall and skip the postage. Don’t forget the “I voted” sticker which you should wear proudly.

Join the Lamorinda Arts Council and lovers of the arts on June 6 in the Art Gallery at the Orinda Library to schmooze and celebrate art, dance, poetry and singing and meet new chair of the board, Jenny
Staelin.

The first Summer Concert in the Park is June 12. Bring your picnic and hear “3-Day Weekend” kick off our fun summer tradition.  They will also be playing on July 4th after our hometown parade.

Come back to the park two days later on June 14 because Beauty and Beast will begin at dusk on the big screen. And because it is a Thursday, you can skip the picnic basket and get your dinner from the food trucks. Thank you to the Park & Rec. Foundation, Orinda Community Foundation and Rotary for the movies and concerts in the park all summer.  June 14 is also Flag Day and Orinda looks great when we have our flags flying.  Thank you to Dick Burk-halter, local Boy Scouts, VFW Post #8063 and Orinda Public Works for hanging our American flags around town.

If you live in a house in Orinda, you need to prepare for fire season.  Create defensible space and clear your property of fire fuel by June 15. The Fire District offers home assessments and information to “harden” your house against fire. Check out the MOFD website and start trimming.

Take your dad to the Farmers’ Market on June 16 (and every Saturday April thru November) to get him a gift for Father’s Day on June 17. Give fathers, whether biological, adopted or a father figure to you, some recognition on this day and maybe take them fishing. Go Fishing Day, June 18, is on a Monday so there will be fewer people with lines in the water at your favorite spot. On June 19 return to the Orinda park with your picnic basket and listen to Priceless, the Tuesday Band in the Park.

June 21 is Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. The sun’s zenith is at its furthest point north of the equator at 3:07 a.m. Orinda time. In terms of daylight, this day is 5 hours, 15 minutes longer than the December Solstice.

On June 26 the Kenya B trio will be playing in the Evening at the Park. And come back to the park on June 28 because Despicable Me 3 will be on the Movie Screen. This, of course, being another Thursday, you will get to enjoy the food trucks again.

We like this easy summer vacation feel at home in our beautiful Orinda Park.
