Stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age Illuminate “The Philadelphia Story”

Katherine Hepburn stars in the classic 1940 MGM movie “The Philadelphia Story,” Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Orinda Theatre.

    Cary Grant? Katherine Hepburn? Jimmy Stewart? All in one movie?
    That’s pretty much the definition of a classic, and 1940’s “The Philadelphia Story” doesn’t disappoint – and luckily for locals, the Orinda Theatre will show “The Philadelphia Story” on the big screen Feb. 25 as it continues its Orinda Classic Movie Matinee series.
    Like all the movies in the series, “The Philadelphia Story” will be preceded by 30 minutes of short subjects, including a newsreel, cartoon and previews of movies forthcoming in the series.
    “The Philadelphia Story” won two Oscars: The first for the sparkling, witty screenplay by Donald Ogden Stewart, based on Philip Barry’s hit Broadway play, and the second for the delightful performance by Stewart.
    Tickets to the Orinda Classic Movie Matinees are $10, and show time is 1 p.m..
    Future Orinda Classic Movie Matinees include Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train,” (March 25), 1939’s “The Women,” featuring “135 women with men on their minds,” (May 27), the 75th anniversary of “The Asphalt Jungle” with a young Marilyn Monroe (July 29), “The African Queen” (Sept. 30) and the 1933 “King Kong” (Oct. 28).

International Film Showcase
    A multi-Oscar nominee and highly regarded French/Iranian film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” is the February offering of the International Film Showcase.
    The movie, written and directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, tells the story of an investigating judge who grapples with paranoia and political unrest in Tehran as tensions grow within his own family.
