Let Your Light Shine This Year

How will you let your light shine this year?
Each January, I choose a word to guide and inspire me throughout the year. This year, my word is SPARK. Like a sparkler at a Fourth of July celebration, this word encourages me to seek out the people, activities and experiences that truly light me up.
Having turned 70 last December, I’m embracing this new decade with excitement and reflection. I’ve been thinking about the moments that have brought me joy and growth. Often, those moments stemmed from saying “yes” – sometimes to big adventures, such as scuba diving in Grand Cayman for my 70th (yeah baby!) — but just as often to small, everyday opportunities, like picking up fresh veggies at the Orinda Farmers’ Market.
Have you ever wondered how much of your life is shaped by the things you say “yes” to? This month, I invite you to explore the possibilities in our community. Turn to the calendar section of this paper or visit our website, and choose one activity or event to attend. It doesn’t have to be a big commitment – just something that sparks your interest or curiosity.

Here are some examples from my life:
    • Discovering new interests: I recently came across a listing for a line-dancing class at the community center. At 70, why not? Saying yes to something playful and new feels exciting.
    • Supporting local farmers: I’m a regular at the Orinda Farmers’ Market, where I find fresh, local produce that aligns with my values of health and sustainability.
    • Connecting with history: Last year, a conversation at the Fourth of July parade DAR booth led me to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. Now, I’m part of a group of inspiring women who honor history and participate in meaningful events.
    • Giving back: As a chiropractor, I’m passionate about service. Volunteering for the Fourth of July parade and Classic Car Show has introduced me to wonderful people and allowed me to witness the joy our community shares during these celebrations.

What will you say “yes” to? Maybe it’s attending a story time at the library with your kids, joining the Lamorinda Chess Club or viewing the latest exhibit in the Orinda Library’s art gallery. Or perhaps it’s diving into a meditation practice with the Lamorinda Meditation Group.
If you’re ready to make a difference, consider volunteering with The Orinda Association. Whether it’s helping with the Classic Car Show, driving seniors for the Seniors Around Town program or even joining The Orinda Association board – there’s a place for everyone to contribute.
Let this be the year you ignite your spark.
Take one small action this week to move your “yes” forward. It doesn’t have to be monumental – just something meaningful to you.
Here’s to a year of sparks, inspiration and shining our collective light across Orinda.
